Got Dry Eyes? Here Are 3 Reasons Why and 7 Ways to Treat It

First, it is important to realize that our tears are crucial for good vision. The first thing light hits when it reaches your eye may be the tear film on the outside of the cornea. The cornea is similar to leading window on the eye as well as the tears are similar to a polish on that window. With each blink, the eyelid spread a smooth layer of tears across the cornea. This light might be focused by the cornea and lens on top of the retina, forming a graphic. When the tears dry around the cornea, they leave a bumpy, irregular surface that distorts the lighting being received by the eye and helps to make the image blurry. If the tears are continually blow drying between blinks, the top of the cornea becomes constantly irregular on account of dead and dying corneal surface cells. This often triggers a reflex to create a great deal of tears, numerous that the tear drain system is overwhelmed as well as the tears drain down our face. When we see this in the clinic, we diagnose dry eyes.
Our tears are made up of 3 components: oil, water and mucus. The watery part is manufactured mainly within the lacrimal gland that’s inside upper outer section of our eye socket within the upper eyelid. There may also be many smaller glands about the insides of our own eyelids. The skin for the inside of our own eyelids makes mucus and rows of glands on our eyelid margins, just behind the eyelashes, result in the oil. All three of these components need to be present within the right amounts to make tears work. Without water, the tears gum up so you get eye matter. Without oil, the tears dry up very quickly between blinks. Without mucus, the tears are far too thin and cover the eye well.
This brings us to the causes of dry eyes:

Lack of tear production. This happens as a result of age, inflammation from the tear glands (including in Sj?gren syndrome ), hormonal changes causing less production and decrease of reflex tearing.

Excessive tear evaporation. Excessive evaporation can occur on account of tears having too few oil (usually on account of blockage from the oil ducts) and not blinking enough (common while using the computer or reading).

Eyelid problems that avoid the tears from being where correctly. Eyelid problems also bring about dry eye. These include poor blink as a result of a facial nerve problem (i.e. Bell’s palsy, facial or head injury), eyelid deformities, eyes not closing after over-aggressive eyelid lifting, along with cases when the eye area protrude, such as thyroid eye disease.

So what could be done regarding it?

Get properly diagnosed by an ophthalmologist who knows dry eyes. They will do that by taking a look at your eyes using a microscope, analyzing your tears with special drops as well as other tests, and considering the health of the corneal surface. They will likely examine the eyelids to ensure you blink and close the eye appropriately.

Use artificial tears. Nearly all varieties of

dry eyes reap the benefits of extra tears. They need to be used often, at the very least four times daily or more to each and every 10-30 minutes in severe cases. There are many different viscosities of tears. The thicker they may be, the longer they’ll last, but thicker tears usually blur the vision for quite a while after these are given. Tear ointments will also be helpful, especially through the night as they can significantly blur the vision when used during the day.

Keep your natural tears around longer. Plugs that block over tear drains inside your eyelids will keep from swallowing away all of the tears since they drain into the nose. In more severe cases, we often permanently close off of the tear drains, that may greatly improve the attention surface. Your natural tears can be enhanced if you take omega-3 supplements.

Practice good eyelid hygiene. Warm compresses on the eyelids to helps oils to flow out easier into the tears. Lid scrubs with mild baby shampoo and warm water along the eyelash margin will also keep your oil flowing and make matter from accumulating inside eyelashes.

Prevent excess evaporation. Blocking out moving air is able to reduce evaporative tear loss. This is done by wearing close fitting sunglasses throughout the day and in many cases special moisture goggles to bed at night. Avoid sleeping within ceiling fan or blowing air conditioning at your vision while driving.

Reduce or eliminate contact wear. Contact lens wearers may use tears or “re-wetting solution” to help keep the eyes more moist and improve lens wear comfort. Never wear them overnight and clean them often, it doesn’t matter what the lens manufacturers say.

In special cases, treat inflammation. In a small amount of people with inflammation with the tear producing glands, eye drops like Restasis can help produce more tears. In my view, this prescription medication is over-prescribed on this country and few patients truly get a make use of it, so caveat emptor.

Dry eye is usual and annoying, but can be readily treated and could increase your vision and overall eye comfort.
